Groundwater Control for Stream Protection

Groundwater Control for Stream Protection

Project Need

A client required immediate groundwater recovery to address an impacted plume discharging into a nearby creek. The contamination stemmed from over 150 years of historic industrial activity and posed ecological risks to local aquatic life. The objective was to intercept and control the affected groundwater flow to prevent further discharge and reduce risk to fish and wildlife.

Services Completed

Lord & Winter mobilized quickly to meet an accelerated implementation schedule, completing system installation and optimization within 30 days. Our team installed two 4-inch recovery wells with 20 feet of screened interval and developed a groundwater extraction system capable of 30 gallons per minute. The system was designed to control the water table drawdown, allowing us to manage the cone of depression within the contaminated zone.

To maximize effectiveness, the groundwater table was lowered to one foot below the stream depth—effectively intercepting discharge to the creek. We also deployed 24-hour, Bluetooth-enabled water quality monitoring at the stream and proposed an innovative neutralization and reinjection strategy to increase the efficiency of remedial fluid use.

Issue Resolved

The system successfully established hydraulic control over the impacted groundwater plume, eliminating discharge to the stream and significantly reducing ecological risk to local fish and wildlife.
