Gulf Coast Jetty Rehabilitation
Environmental Compliance - Florida
Project Need
As part of post-hurricane recovery and ongoing redevelopment efforts, a federal contractor required environmental support to assess and restore jetty structures at a military installation on the Gulf Coast of Florida. These jetties, critical for protecting marina infrastructure and shoreline areas, were significantly damaged during Hurricane Michael in 2018.
Services Completed
Lord & Winter supported environmental compliance efforts by conducting a Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) survey to meet agency requirements during the permitting process. The team also facilitated pre-application coordination with both the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP), and assisted with preparation of Section 404/10 and Environmental Resource Permit (ERP) applications. Consultation with the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) was also initiated to fulfill Section 7 of the Endangered Species Act.
Issue Resolved
By addressing regulatory requirements early in the process, Lord & Winter minimized the risk of delays tied to environmental permitting and interagency coordination. The SAV survey and NMFS consultation were key to ensuring compliance with federal and state environmental standards, allowing the project to progress without interruption while maintaining protection for sensitive marine resources.
